About Us
To prevent the victimization and injury of our
children through innovation, education and collaboration with community stakeholders.
|
We can probably
all recall a number of unfortunate stories where a child that we know had been seriously injured or in some cases abducted,
ending in horrific results. Some examples may include: a biking accident where a child sustains head injuries; a bullying
incident where someone’s young child is victimized by a group of their peers; or the most dreaded of all … a child-abduction.
Some of these stories make the news headlines and others do not. It seems to be human nature to think it won’t happen
to our children, but it is real, and it does happen everyday within communities throughout the world.
The Child Safety Research
and Innovation Center (CSRIC) is determined to make a difference. CSRIC will be proactive in the area of child safety and
prevention by creating community awareness and providing learning experiences that change attitudes and behaviour. If stakeholders
in the community and our children are empowered with knowledge, they will be better equipped to handle the avoidance of a
potentially tragic situation. The safety prevention support services and educational products produced by CSRIC will help
to empower the children, parents, educators, community resource officers, and all other stakeholders within our communities.
CSRIC understands
that it is a challenge to captivate a young audience. Our approach will concentrate on the innovative use of simulations and
educational games to effectively reach this audience. A combination of learning and entertainment will motivate children to
learn important concepts and strategies to avoid potentially harmful situations. This is a well proven approach that can be
seen in the success of organizations such as the Children’s Television Workshop. Their production of Sesame Street is
a huge success world-wide in reaching out to children and instilling important skills and values while at the same time providing
quality entertainment in a very creative and innovative way. Characters like Cookie Monster, Big Bird and Elmo have become
cultural icons for all of us. CSRIC will use effective animation, graphics and educational gaming strategies to successfully
carry out its mission.
In addition to our primary
focus on children, CSRIC will also focus on developing support materials and training applications for those community segments
that put their lives on the line for the protection of children: the Policing, Firefighting and Emergency Measures Communities.
